LEMMA*, which is based on the Collins Cobuild vocabulary database, gives you a reliable figure about the size of your English vocabulary.

How many English words do you know - 3000, 5000, 10000 or more? This diagnostic test will tell you.

The test

  • is based on scientific studies on vocabulary frequency
  • has been tested among thousands of students all over Europe
  • consists of diagnostic tests whose pedagogical value is enhanced by context based exercises
  • will activate your passive vocabulary

LEMMA vocabulary tests are designed to find out how many words your PASSIVE vocabulary contains. Each time you run a test, new words are generated at random from a database.

In the LEMMA vocabulary test you are presented with one basic word (or lemma) and five different words which we call "distractors". One of these distractors has a strong connexion to the lemma - it may be a synonym to the lemma (i.e. mean the same thing) or "almost" a synonym. Many words can also be closely associated to the lemma like e.g. "knife" and "fork".

There are tests at three levels:

  • elementary
(up to the 5000th most common word)
  • intermediate
(up to the 15000th most common word)
  • advanced
(from the 3000th word up to the 25000th most common word)

The elementary tests consist of 80 test items each. The intermediate and advanced tests consist of 120 test items each.

To go through one test carefully generally takes 30 - 40 minutes.
